Alex Luna joined the South Florida beach volleyball staff as an assistant coach in June 2026, hired by head coach Jo Kremer after helping lead Boise State to its first-ever NCAA Championship appearance. Luna brings a wealth of Division I experience from stops at South Carolina, Stephen F. Austin, and San José State, along with a reputation for developing student-athletes through a creative, open-minded coaching style.
Luna joined the Boise State beach volleyball coaching staff in August 2024 as an assistant coach. He was involved in all aspects of the program, from helping with the day-to-day operation, developing drills, running practices, travel, scouting, and recruiting.
At BSU, he completed a Master's Degree in Athletic Leadership during his tenure, which included spearheading a department-wide coach education professional development project dubbed "The Coaches Collab." He also gained teaching experience assisting in two courses: Sociology of Sport, and Philosophy of Sport.
His first season with the Broncos brought unparalleled success to the program, as the Blue and Orange made its first NCAA National Tournament appearance after claiming a Southland Conference regular season and tournament championship. Year two built on that success and resulted in the Broncos earning a national ranking for the first time in program history and ultimately ended with five victories over ranked opponents, leaving them ranked #18 in the final AVCA poll.
Luna joined the Bronco staff after serving as an assistant coach for South Carolina the prior season. As an assistant coach with the Gamecocks, Luna developed and led the on-court training and film study. He helped lead the Gamecocks to a 20-16 record and a Coastal Collegiate Sports Association tournament championship appearance, the first in program history and the best program finish in over 10 years.
Prior to his time at South Carolina, Luna founded the beach volleyball program at Stephen F. Austin. Along with the success on the sand, his program achieved the highest departmental GPA and earned several national academic awards. On top of coaching and recruiting, he spearheaded plans for a four-court facility, designed and managed a new budget, oversaw travel logistics, fundraised over $25,000 a year for the program, and mentored several graduate assistant coaches who went on to full-time roles.
Prior to Stephen F. Austin, he worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for both the beach and indoor programs at San José State. He also has experience working with the USA Beach National Team Development Program as a boys and girls development coach and National Team Scout, as well as at the pro level with the Association of Volleyball Professionals.
He has twice been recognized as a 30 Under 30 Award winner from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has been invited to present multiple times at the AVCA National Convention.
An active player, he regularly competes on all surfaces and currently plays outdoor on the AVP Grass Tour and AVP Beach qualifiers. He also plays in the Volleyball League of America, a semi-professional indoor league where he plays as a libero and a setter.
He graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he earned degrees in psychology and marketing. He competed in both volleyball and baseball, while also serving as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball team.
