Abigi Id-Deen

A veteran of nearly 20 years of experience who has coached a total of 49 All-Americans, Abigi Id-Deen is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the USF Track and Field program. He works primarily with the USF sprinters and hurdlers.

Id-deen was promoted to Associate Head Coach on August 14, 2023.

During the 2024 indoor season, the 60m school record was broken multiple times. First by Jermaine Dyges with a time of 6.68. Then ultimately at the conference championship with Abdul-Rasheed Saminu running a time of 6.57. Saminu would go on to place eighth at the NCAA indoor championships. Becoming the first USF sprinter to compete in the 60m at the NCAA championship. Freshman Markel Jones would win the 60mh at the conference championship and run on the winning 4x400m relay team which earned him the Freshman of the Year Award. Jaleel Croal won the 60m and well as the 200m at the conference championship which would allow him to win the Most Valuable Athlete Award. Zahria Allers-Liburd broke the 200m indoor school record (23.53).

In the 2023 outdoor season, Michael Bourne III tied his school record in the 110mh as well as winning the 400mh at the AAC championship meet. His 400mh time of (50.86) also moved him to fifth all-time in school history. Bourne would go on to compete at the NCAA Preliminary round in the 110mh as well as 400mh and 4x400 relay. Following the AAC Championships, Sanique Walker would be victorious in the 400mh while breaking the school record as well as the conference record with a time of 55.87. Walker would go on to be a finalist in the Jamaican National Championship the hurdles. After competing with the 4x100m relay at the NCAA Championships; Jaleel Croal would go on to represent the British Virgin Islands in the 200m at the CAC games in San Salvador.

During the 2023 indoor season Zayquan Lincoln became the school record holder in the 60m. with a time of 6.73 and would go on to be a conference finalist in the 60m as well as the 200m. Michael Bourne III would become runner-up at the AAC championships in the 60mh. 

The 2022 outdoor season concluded with Shaneylix Davila qualifying for the NCAA championships in the 100mh and Sanique Walker becoming no. 3 all-time in the 400mh hurdles while qualifying for the NCAA Championships as well. Both athletes reached all-conference honors in the 400mh. Michael Bourne III broke the school record outdoor in the 110mh while qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds joining Shaneylix, Sanique, and Hannah Connell. After their success during the outdoor season, both Shaneylix (Puerto Rico) and Hannah (Barbados) went on the represent their countries at the 2022 (u23) Caribbean Games making the final in the 100mh.

In the 2022 Indoor campaign, Shaneylix Davila broke the previous school record held by Adriana Janic in the 60mh seven times to bring the time down to (8.19). Hannah Connell also ran (8.20) in the 60mh and broke the school record indoor in the 200m (23.87)

During the 2021 season seven student-athletes under Id-Deen shot up into USF’s all-time record books with eleven placements. Duncan Agyemang qualified for the NCAA Championships after placing no. 4 on the all-time 400mh with a time of 50.82.

Jae’Nisa Heckstall currently sets the USF record in the 400mh with 56.94 and is the no. 2 all-time record holder in the 100m hurdles. She grabbed multiple titles at the 2021 AAC Championship in the 400mh and 4x400, the relay tabbing her as a NCAA Championship Qualifier. After her success in the 2021 season, Heckstall secured her spot for the USATF Olympic Trials.

Id-Deen has also coached 4x100 NCAA 1st round qualifier Kadesha Prescott. Additionally, Prescott is no. 7 in the 100m all-time and a 4x100 NCAA Championship qualifier. Dee Jennings, NCAA 1st round qualifier 110mh and sits at no. 3 all-time for the 110mh hurdles. Danelson Mahautiere currently boasts spots on the all-time list for no. 3 100m and no. 7 200m outdoor. And Zahria Allers-Liburd stands at no. 9 on the 200m indoor all-time list with 24.84.

Shaneylix Davila went on to become the Puerto Rican National Champion in the 100mh and is the current school record holder of the 100mh. Davila also sits at spots two and three for the 60mh and 400mh all-time rankings.

In his first season with the Bulls, Id-Deen led Adriana Janic to a school record indoor in the 60mh (8.29) during the 2020 indoor season. The outdoor season was cancelled due to Covid-19.

Prior to USF, Id-Deen spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina and helped the Tar Heels win back-to-back ACC Outdoor Championships in the men’s 4x400 meter relays while also taking 10th at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Id-Deen also helped Anna Keefer earn All-ACC honors in both the women’s indoor and outdoor long jump while posting the third-best 60 meters and fourth-best 100 meters time in school history. Keefer also qualified and competed in three events at the NCAA East Regional.

In his first season at North Carolina, Id-Deen made a huge impact on the North Carolina record books. Cierra Dunston, McKinley McNeill, Dontavian Smith and Kenny Selmon all qualified for at least one ACC Indoor Championship final and each earned a spot among the top-five all-time marks at UNC. Brianna Duncan broke the school record in the 60-meter, clocking in at 7.29, before setting two more Carolina records in the outdoor season — a time of 11.27 in the 100 and 23.03 in the 200. Both the men's and women's outdoor 4x100 relays also ran times that rank in the top-five in the history of Carolina track & field and a number of athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Anna Keefer won indoor ACC long jump title as a freshman and earned second-team All-America honors during outdoor season. Most notably, Id-Deen coached Selmon who went on to claim the NCAA runner-up title in the 400-meter hurdles after clocking in a new school record time of 48.12 at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Kenny also went on to win the USATF 400H title in Des Moines, Iowa.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., raised in Arizona, Id-Deen was an assistant coach for sprints at Tennessee from 2015-17 where he specialized in long sprints, hurdles and relays. With the Volunteers, Id-Deen coached 400-meter student-athletes Nathan Strother (45.07) and Felicia Majors (51.29) and two 4x400 teams to All-America honors in 2016. Also, during the 2016 season, the Volunteer women broke the 4x400 school record on their way to winning the SEC Indoor Championship.

Under Id-Deen, freshman Ari Cogdell ran 46.27 to become of a member of the United States Junior 4x400 team, which win the gold medal at the 2016 U-20 World Championships in Poland. He also coached freshman Brooklynn Broadwater to the seventh-fastest time in Tennessee history in the 400-meter hurdles when she finished in 58.20 at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Prior to Tennessee, Id-Deen spent nine years at George Mason, beginning his stint there as an assistant coach. In 2011, Id-Deen was promoted to associate head coach after guiding student-athletes to 10 All-America performances in the Patriot sprints and jumps and the men’s team to Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2010 and 2011.

Following the promotion, Id-Deen earned the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year Award after helping the Patriot men to their third consecutive CAA title. Eleven of his athletes qualified for the NCAA East Region Championships that year, with two moving on to the National Championships. Also in 2012, Id-Deen coached LaVell Handy to the Most Outstanding Field Performer Award at the CAA Championships. Handy qualified for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the long jump and took part in the Olympic Trials at the end of the season.

In 2013, Id-Deen coached the Patriot men's 4x400-meter relay team to All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Sprinter David Verburg was second-team All-America during the indoor season and earned first-team honors during the outdoor campaign in the 400. Verburg would go on to the USA Championships where his 400 time of 44.75 earned a place at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia. The women's 4x400 also picked up second-team All-America honors that season.

In 2014, the Patriot women's squad claimed the Atlantic 10 Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Three of Id-Deen’s athletes seized individual titles at the A-10 Outdoor Championships, as did the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams.

In total, Id-Deen coached 21 All-America individuals, six All-America relays, 48 individual conference champions and 18 conference relay champions in his nine seasons at George Mason.

Prior to George Mason, Id-Deen spent two years as a member of Richmond's track and field staff, working primarily with the sprints, jumps and hurdle events. During his two-year tenure, his athletes broke 17 school records and earned five all-conference selections.

Id-Deen coached Richmond’s Jessica Young to the World Junior Championships and five school records, including the 60, 200, and indoor 400, and outdoor 200 and 400. Young was the first female sprinter in Spider history to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 400 and the NCAA East Regional Championships in the 200 and 400.

Before becoming a member of the Richmond staff, he served two years as a volunteer assistant at Phoenix College (Ariz.), primarily working with the sprints and jumps.

Id-Deen competed in track and field at Central Arizona College from 1997-99 prior to transferring to Arizona State. He set a long jump personal best of 24-06, ran the 200 meters in 21.32 and set a personal mark of 47.50 in the 400 meters. He graduated from ASU in 2002. He and his wife, Kia (formerly Kia Davis) were married in August of 2014; Kia is a 2008 Olympian for Liberia, where she holds six-national records. The couple has two sons, Akil and Khair.

Id-Deen is a USATF level I and II certified instructor in sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events. He also holds USTFCCCA certification in advanced strength and conditioning
