Women’s Basketball (1984-89)
Wanda Guyton was the torchbearer in many cases for the University of South Florida women's basketball program, putting the program on the map and making a name for herself on a national level. Guyton lettered in women's basketball for four seasons during the 1984-85 and 1986-89 seasons, and played primarily as post player who saw time as a forward and center.
Guyton still owned 10 career records 20 seasons after completing her college eligibility and completed her playing career as USF’s all-time leading scorer (1,820) and rebounder (1,077), marks she held until Jessica Dickson broke her scoring record in 2007 and Alisia Jenkins topped her rebounding mark in 2016. Guyton now ranks fourth on USF’s all-time scoring list and her 18.8 points per game career average stands second while her 11.0 rebounds per game average leads all USF players.
Guyton was selected as a Kodak All-America honorable mention in 1989 and the 1989 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. She was a three-time Sun Belt All-Conference selection, earning first-team honors once (1988-89) and second-team accolades twice (1986-86, 1987-88). Guyton led USF in scoring and rebounding in three seasons, averaging better than 19 points and 10 rebounds per game each season, including 22.3 ppg and 10.9 rpg in 1986-87 and 20.3 ppg and 14.0 rpg in 1988-89.
After USF, Guyton was an inaugural member of the WNBA, playing for the Houston Comets (1997-99) and was a member of their first two WNBA world championship teams (1997-98). Guyton also played for the Detroit Shock (2000) and helped her German club team win four league championships and a German Cup championship. Guyton was the FIBA Cup’s top rebounder three times and also played in Japan, Spain and Italy.
Guyton was inducted into the USF Athletics Hall of Fame with the first class in 2009.
