November 22, 2005 | Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Saturday, Nov. 22) ? The University of South Florida men's soccer team (13-6-2) saw its stellar 2005 campaign come to an end with a heartbreaking penalty kick shootout loss to No. 13 Virginia (12-4-3) on Tuesday night in the second round of the NCAA Championship.
The score remained deadlocked at 4-4 through regulation and a pair of overtime sessions. The Cavaliers secured the win with a 7-6 victory in the eighth round of penalty kicks.
The Bulls led 2-0 in the first half before being forced to rally and force the overtime periods. USF also had an opportunity to advance in the shootout, but the victory-securing attempt was wide.
USF's top three scorers factored in the match. Freshman Jordan Seabrook netted a pair of goals and sophomores Rodrigo Hidalgo and Simon Schoendorf also added markers. Hidalgo also chipped in a pair of assists and Schoendorf had one of his own.
“It's a frustrating way to lose the game,” said head coach George Kiefer. “But, I thought the guys played well. We have a real young team. To have a two-goal lead and have it slip away is something that hurts. I was happy with the way our team responded when they (Virginia) went up by a goal. Once we did that, I thought that we had a good chance to walk away with the win. It was two good teams that went at it in a very good soccer game.”
The Bulls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals by Hidalgo and Seabrook in the first 23 minutes of the match. Hidalgo netted his seventh goal of the season with a ninth-minute strike. Both Sammy Castellanos and Schoendorf were credited with assists on the goal. Seabrook scored his 13th goal of the season in the 23rd minute on a give-and-go with Hidalgo at the edge of the Cavalier's 18-yard box.
UVa answered with two goals by midfielder Dane Murphy. The Cavaliers took their first lead of the game with a score by Joe Vide in the 43rd minute.
USF responded in the 44th minute with Seabrook's 14th goal of the season. Joey Brown sent a long cross into the UVa area where Seabrook connected with a header into the back of the net. Brown and Hidalgo were both credited with assists on the score.
Both teams entered halftime tied at 3-3 with Virginia holding a 7-4 edge in shots.
Yannick Reyering gave Virginia a 4-3 lead with his 13th goal of the season in the 47th minute.
Schoendorf tied the game at 4-all, after converting his second penalty kick attempt of the season in the 54th minute. The PK was the result of Seabrook being taken down in the penalty area by goalkeeper Ryan Burke.
