USF Takes On No. 4 West Virginia In BIG EAST Quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 26, 2006) - Coming off one of the most lopsided victories in post-season play with a 5-1 win over Seton Hall on Wednesday, the University of South Florida men's soccer team (9-5-4, 4-3-4 BIG EAST) travels to Morgantown, W.Va., to face the No.4-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The game will be a rematch of last season's quarterfinal contest in which the Bulls downed the Mountaineers, 4-1, at the USF Soccer Stadium (11/5/05). Saturday's match will be the second meeting this season between the two sides. Both teams faced off on Sept. 15. The match ended in a 2-2 (2OT) draw, making USF the only BIG EAST team to earn a point versus West Virginia.
The Bulls enter Saturday's game riding the high of a 5-1 win over Seton Hall in BIG EAST Championship First-Round action (10/25). USF scored a goal on each of its first three shots and never looked back. The 5-1 victory was the most lopsided affair in post-season play since USF defeated South Alabama, 8-1, during the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament (Nov. 2, 1984 in Mobile, Ala.).
Rodrigo Hidalgo led the charge for the Bulls, scoring two goals - his first multiple-goal game of the season. Hidalgo enters the West Virginia game with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Leading the team in scoring is sophomore Jordan Seabrook (6g, 3a, 15 pts.). The Indianapolis, Ind., native picked up his 15th point with an assist versus the Pirates on Wednesday. Senior Hunter West registered his fourth goal of the season, scoring the game-winner in the 19th minute of Wednesday's contest. Junior Kris Raad, who leads the Bulls with six assists, notched his first goal of the season during the 5-1 victory.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner picked up his ninth win of the season, registering seven saves versus the Pirates on Wednesday. The High Point, N.C., native enters the quarterfinal match with a 0.78 goals against average. With the seven saves on Wednesday, Brenner has tied his single-season record for saves (72).
West Virginia enters Saturday's game riding an eight-game winning streak. The Mountaineers are ranked in the top five and are unbeaten at home in 2006 (9-0-1). Winners of the Blue Division, West Virginia is led by forward Jarrod Smith. The junior has recorded 14 goals and notched four assists for 32 points this year. Goalkeeper Nick Noble comes into this weekend's contest posting a 0.63 GAA and nine shutouts in 2006.
