Tampa, Fla. (October 8, 2006) ? The University of South Florida women's soccer team ended their four-game losing streak Sunday afternoon at the USF Soccer Stadium with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers.
The Bulls are now 6-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the BIG EAST while Pittsburgh drops to 7-5-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference.
Pittsburgh made the first strike of the game, as forward Meta Haley attempted the first shot on goal of the BIG EAST match up. USF goalkeeper Casey Garrett blocked the shot, but could not control possession of the ball, and Kristina Francois rebounded with a floating chip shot that was just over the top of the goal.
The USF attack began in the 7th minute of the contest with a 25-foot shot from senior Erin Dafeldecker that was saved by Panther keeper Allison Finch.
Fifteen minutes later Garrett was amidst another scuffle in front of the USF net, as a shot taken by Haley was again blocked but not controlled, and Corina Sebesta took a follow-up shot that was then corralled by Garrett.
Pitt broke onto the scoreboard in the 28th minute of the first half, as Sebesta led Haley to the top of the box with a through ball. Haley placed her left-footed shot into the top left corner of the goal to go ahead of the Bulls 1-0.
After five shot attempts from the Bulls in the second half, freshman Rachel Jakubowski tied the game by scoring the first goal of her USF-career off an assist from junior Autumn Browning. The helper was Browning's first of the season.
With the scored knotted at one apiece, the Bulls and Panthers entered the first 10-minute overtime.
After a back-and-forth possession game, Bull senior Jenna Ball sent a ball toward Lindsay Brauer who was darting to the net. Brauer caged the pass and rocked a shot into the back of the goal for her third game-winning goal of the season.
USF goalkeeper Casey Garrett saved 10 shots in 95 minutes while Pittsburgh's Finch stopped four shots, including two from Browning one apiece from Paulina McIntosh and Erin Dafeldecker.
The Bulls conclude their four-game homestand next weekend when Louisville and Cincinnati come to Tampa. USF will host Louisville Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and will end the home portion of the regular season Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Cincinnati.
