USF WoMen's Tennis Advances to BIG EAST Championship Match

Tampa, Fla. (April 22, 2006) ? The No. 2 seed USF women's tennis team defeated No. 3 seed Louisville Cardinals in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship, 4-0, Saturday morning at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
USF will now play the defending champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Championship Match. Notre Dame defeated the DePaul Blue Demons, 4-0 to advance to the finals.
In doubles competition, the Bulls took two matches at the No. 1 and 2 positions to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
The No. 10 ranked duo of Gabriela Duch and Neyssa Etienne had no problem defeating Robyn White and Maria Klokotzky at the No. 1 spot, 8-1.
Liz Cruz and Iciri Rai of USF clinched the point by taking care of Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez, 8-6.
On court No. 3, Courtney Vernon and Luisa Obando were up 7-6 on Natalie Laszkowski and Suzanna Gracanin before the match was stopped.
In singles play, USF saw victories from No. 57 ranked Courtney Vernon, No. 75 Liz Cruz and freshman Iciri Rai.
Vernon defeated White at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for the host Bulls. With this win, Vernon raises her record to a perfect 17-0 on the spring season.
USF will play in its first BIG EAST Championship match tomorrow morning at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The first serve again Notre Dame will be at 9 a.m.
