Men's Tennis Takes Down Marquette To Advance To Semi-Finals
April 20, 2007 | Men's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. (April 20, 2007) ? With a 4-0 win in its opening match of the 2007 BIG EAST Championships, the third-seeded University of South Florida men's tennis team advanced to its second-straight semi-final match up. The men move on to face No. 2 Louisville on Sat. at 9 a.m. on the Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bulls used one doubles point and three singles victories to claim the win over the No. 6 seeded Golden Eagles. USF also won the regular season match in which Marquette visited the Varsity Tennis Courts on Mar. 10, by a score of 7-0.
In this match however, Marquette very nearly captured the opening doubles point. After courts one and three were split, action centered on the No. 2 position where Trent Hagan and Pete Van Lieshout of MU held a one game advantage over Henning Hipp and Daniel Daudt throughout the latter stages of the match. The USF pair fought back to tie and then watched the score see-saw all the way into a tie-break. USF's duo banded together to swing the battle in the Bulls favor, eventually seizing a 9-8(6) victory.
Singles play then saw three Bulls win in straight sets to propel the team to its second consecutive semi-final appearance. Marc Jaeger set down Stephen Shao on court two, 6-2, 6-2, Thomas Estrada defeated Greg Sirotek 6-3, 6-2 on No. 5 and Henning Hipp prevailed against Van Lieshout 6-4, 6-3 from the sixth spot.
The win pits the Bulls against a Louisville Cardinals squad that defeated No. 7 seed Georgetown earlier in the day. USF and UofL last met on April 8 in Louisville in which the Cardinals narrowly prevailed 4-3 on indoor courts. Match time is set for 9 a.m. and admission is free.
