NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team came into “Music City USA” looking at one of its biggest challenges of the 2007-08 season ? with its game against Vanderbilt, who is getting votes in both Top 25 polls ? while also trying to extend the second longest winning streak in school history to 10 games.
Unfortunately, in a city that is known for its Southern hospitality and world famous for country music, the Commodores sent the Bulls back to Tampa singing the blues, as Vanderbilt handed USF a 75-48 loss tonight at Memorial Gymnasium.
USF (10-3) hit just six field goals in the first half en route to a dismal 22.2 percent (6-27) shooting performance in the first half including just 17 percent (2-12) from behind the three-point arc. The Bulls, however, only trailed by eight points, 28-20 at the intermission due to sloppy play by Vandy ? turning the ball over 18 times ? and their own shooting woes hitting 33.3 percent from the floor (9-27).
The Commodores seemed to fix any issues that it was having in the first half at the break as they came out in the second half using a 14-2 run ? which eventually extended to a 21-5 run ? that blew the game wide open.
Vanderbilt would extend its lead to as many as 32 points with 6:21 left in the second half en route to the victory.
Daiane Packer led USF with 11 points while Shantia Grace added 10 points.
The Bulls would finish the game shooting just 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field while also turning the ball over 20 times.
The Bulls' 48 points scored was the fewest since it scored the same amount against Pittsburgh on Jan. 20, 2007.
USF returns to the Sun Dome on Saturday, Jan. 5 when it faces No. 17 West Virginia at 7 p.m. The contest can be seen live on Catch 47, and on 1010 Sports WQYK AM.
