TAMPA ? Despite another strong defensive performance, the University of South Florida women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to St. John's at Belsen Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
“The team came out and played well,” said Bulls coach Denise Schilte-Brown. “The effort was there but we just didn't get the result we wanted. We will take the experience and use it to continue to get better.”
Junior goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi continued her strong play in between the post for the Bulls. The Philadelphia native registered nine saves on the afternoon playing all 90 minutes, pushing her season total to a BIG EAST best 92 saves.
The Redstorm's Jen Leaverton would deliver the matches lone goal in the 44th minute off an assist from Courtney Lane and Amanda Santos to give the Redstorm the lead that they would not relinquish.
Senior captain Jeannette Dyer and freshmen Molly Stack and Rehana Murani did not leave the field for USF playing the entire 90 minutes this afternoon.
The Bulls were aggressive offensively but struggled to gain any rhythm on the attack.
The loss drops the Bulls to 7-4-3 on the season and 3-3-1 in the BIG EAST and St. John's moves to 5-4-4 and 1-3-2 in conference.
“We had a good weekend proving that we can play well in two consecutive games on the road,” added Schilte-Brown. “It will be great to get back home. Being home for the next four games will be huge for us.”
The Bulls will now return home for the rest of the regular season to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and then will host Louisville for a noon kickoff on Sunday, Oct. 19.
