BOX SCORE
TAMPA, Fla. ? No. 13 University of South Florida played 110 minutes of solid soccer but ended in a 0-0 tie against Syracuse in double overtime on Friday night at the USF Soccer Stadium.
The Bulls, 6-1-2 on the season and 4-0-1 in league play, still remain in first place in the BIG EAST Red Division.
“I think the guys did well,” said USF head coach George Kiefer. “I give Syracuse's goalkeeper credit, he made some great plays when it was just one-on-one. We had at least four chances that could have easily gone our way. The game is about creating chances and the guys who may not have finished well tonight will finish on Tuesday.”
The Bulls outshot the Orange 19-11 in the game, while holding an 8-4 advantage on goal.
Senior midfielder Kevon Neaves fired a shot in the box in the 58th minute that the Syracuse goalkeeper needed a diving save to keep the score at zero. After Neaves' shot rebounded off the goalkeeper, junior Zak Boggs fired it just high.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made some great defensive plays throughout the game and ended the night with four saves.
“We responded well in the second half with a couple of tweaks to neutralize them and felt we had complete control for the rest of the game,” said Kiefer. “It was a little bit unlucky that we didn't win the game tonight, but that's the way soccer goes. We are very happy with our team right now and how they have been playing and how hard they have been working.”
On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Bulls will head to Chicago, Ill. to face the DePaul Blue Demons. They are currently 3-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference action. This is the 15th meeting all-time between the teams. The Bulls lead the all-time series 12-2-0. The last meeting took place Oct. 16, 2007 and the Bulls came out on top 2-0 at home.
