NEW ORLEANS ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games tonight - the third longest in school history ? with an 80-66 win over Tulane at Fogleman Arena. The win improves USF's overall record to 13-1 marking the best start in school history.
The Bulls, who came into the game as the top scoring team in the nation averaging 93 points per game, found themselves in a dog-fight early in the contest as neither team led by more than five points in the first half.
Tulane shot an impressive 53.3 percent (16-30) from the field in the first stanza while USF hit just 35.9 percent (14-39). The Green Wave also controlled the paint, in the first 20 minutes, outscoring the Bulls 18-8 in the lane.
USF trailed at the intermission for just the second time this season with Tulane leading at the intermission 36-33.
The Bulls came out in the second half and didn't hit their first field goal until 15:12 left in the game when Shantia Grace hit a 15-foot jumper to cut the Green Wave's lead to 43-39.
USF would come back to take its first lead of the second half when Jazmine Sepulveda drove to the basket, hit the lay-up and got fouled. She would hit the free throw to give the Bulls their first advantage, 55-54, since leading 29-28 with 4:19 left in the first half.
After hitting one of it's next three from the free throw line to tie the game at 55-all, Tiffany Aidoo would give Tulane a 57-55 edge with 6:41 remaining in the contest.
Janae Stokes would then give the Bulls the jump-start that they needed. Stoke would hit three-point shots on back-to-back possessions to give USF a 63-58 advantage with 4:52 left in the game.
The Bulls would outscore the Green Wave 17-8 in the final 4:52 of the contest while hitting eight of its 10 attempts from the charity stripe.
Grace would lead five players in double figures with 24 points while Stokes added 12 points in the win. Jessica Lawson, Jazmine Sepulveda and Jasmine Wynne chipped in with 11, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Porche Grant ended the night with a team-high 10 rebounds.
USF shot 36.8 percent (25-68) from the field while Tulane hit just 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor, including 27.3 percent (9-33) from the field in the second half after its hot performance in the first stanza.
The Bulls will open BIG EAST play on Jan. 3 when they face Marquette in Milwaukee at 8 p.m. (EST/7 p.m. (CST).
