July 23, 2008 | Men's Soccer
TAMPA ? A pair of University of South Florida men's soccer players have had some off-season success as of late in the Premiere Development League playoffs.
The Bulls have two players, Zak Boggs and Diego Restrepo, playing with the Bradenton Academics, a Premiere Development League (PDL) team.
The Academics have earned a No. 2 seed in the Southern Division's Southeast Conference with a regular season record of 10-2-4. The postseason appearance is the fifth in the last 11 seasons for Bradenton, with the last one coming in 2006.
Boggs, a junior forward from Vienna, W.Va., started his collegiate career with West Virginia in 2005 and then transferred to the University of Central Florida. He sat out the 2007 season due to NCAA transfer rules, and will play his first season with USF in 2008.
Boggs has been impressive for Bradenton this season as he is second in total points in the PDL with 32. He is also tied for second in the league with 14 goals.
Also contributing to the Academics is Restrepo, the Bulls' goalkeeper. Restrepo is a sophomore from Cali, Columbia, and played in 20 of 22 games for USF in 2007. After redshirting in 2006, he started last season and contributed eight shutouts for the Bulls.
Restrepo has also played a key role this season for Bradenton. He is tied for fifth in goals against (11) during the PDL regular season.
Bradenton enters the tournament as the No. 7 overall seed, and will take on the Mid South Division Champion, Austin Aztecs, in the conference semifinals.
The conference round takes place July 25-27 where the champions will move onto the PDL semifinals. The PDL Final is set to take place on Aug. 9.
