? Minor scrimmages notes from the morning practice.
On A.J. Love's touchdown reception, Coach Canales said, "He set his man up perfectly. It was beautiful."
Coach Douglas reports that there were three or maybe four interceptions by the defense, one by Jerrell Young and, "At least two, but I think three," by safety Louis Gachette.
? Coach Douglas gave a little free fatherly knowledge to a young defensive back coming off the field today.
"Just remember I'm always right. I'm the coach," said Douglas. "And when you get married one day, your wife will always be right too.
"Don't forget it."

? After signing at least 2,000 autographs on Sunday, GoUSFBulls.com asked Matt Grothe if his hand was okay and whether he could grip the football today and he said, "I'm good," with a coy smile.
? Grothe and the team were in good enough condition to do some live 11-on-11 work this morning. The little bit of information that came out of the closed practice was that Grothe connected with A.J. Love on a fade route from the one-yard line. We'll see if we can get anymore information after practice.
? There is a new player in the role of 'personal protector' or 'up-back' on punt team. The player is the last line of defense for the punter and also responsible for the snap count. Filling the role so far in 2008 is walk-on linebacker Kenneth Luberice. Last year, departed senior Sam Miller was in that position.
? The linebackers and a couple safeties were doing some hands drills during practice and associate head coach Wally Burnham brought in a co-worker to do the passing. After a little prodding from Carlton Williams, Burnham decided he would open up the arm even though he still has an old rotator cuff injury that limits his mobility. He bounced the pass half way to the waiting linebacker and began laughing. So did Williams, for a moment before offering up, " That's okay Coach B, that's okay."

Daily Drill
This morning the defensive line took to the air, working on their explosion by practicing a drill that could have been called The Superman Drill. Starting in a three-point stance, D-linemen are to take one explosive step then fly onto a large pad that is about the size of a bed mattress. Coach Kevin Patrick gave defensive end Jarriett Buie the most props during the drill.
Practice Team Getting Older
Coaches Rich Rachel (OC) and Jared Davis (FB), along with strength and conditioning coaches Ron McKeefery (RB) and Pat St. Louis (TE) worked as the offensive unit in defensive practice drills.

? Defensive backs coach Troy Douglas was asked who is the fastest player in the secondary and he expanded the answer to the whole team. "George Baker," said Douglas. "He even outran (wide receiver) Carlton Mitchell when everyone reported to camp. George is special fast, he's a sub 4.4 (40-yard dash) guy."

? Tom Zebold of the Lakeland Ledger writes, "The South Florida Bulls are no longer a surprise team and George Selvie could be a perfect example of why. The defensive end made a statement last season by posting eye-popping numbers that would make opposing offensive coordinators cringe."
? Greg Auman of the St. Petersburg Times writes that the, "Two years ago, USF's Fan Appreciation Day drew little more than a few hundred fans to the practice fields on campus for a chance to watch a half-hour of practice and get autographs from coach Jim Leavitt and the players."
Auman has already checked in with an update on Monday's morning practice.
? Brett McMurphy of the Tampa Tribune writes, "That's exactly what Danny Verpaele did. The 5-foot-11, 207-pound safety was a tireless worker in the offseason. USF returns both starting safeties in Nate Allen and Carlton Williams, but don't be surprised to see Verpaele in the starting lineup this fall, secondary coach Troy Douglas said." McMurphy also ran a notepad.
