Bulls Plank Pirates & Take Early Lead in BIG EAST Race

TAMPA, Fla. ? The No. 17 University of South Florida men's soccer team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 2-0, on the road Sunday to improve to 2-0 in BIG EAST play. USF improved to 4-1-1 on the season, while the Pirates dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
“One of things we have been working on is when the whistle blows and the game starts, we need to get out of the gates fast,” said USF head coach George Kiefer, whose team downed Georgetown 2-1 on the road Friday. “I think our guys did a good job today and our team was very disciplined in our approach to Seton Hall. It's a great start to league play, having two road wins in the bank as we head back to Tampa for three straight home games.”
Kiefer was not exaggerating the fast start, as the Bulls only needed two minutes of play to get on the scoreboard.
Senior Jordan Seabrook passed the ball from the right side to fellow senior Jason Devenish, who blasted it into the back of the net from 12 yards out.
Early aggressiveness was the story again in the second half, when the Bulls scored with just three minutes off the clock. After a foul on Seton Hall, a free kick allowed senior Yohance Marshall to head it past Seton Hall goalkeeper Paul McHenry.
USF had eight shots in the second half, 14 in the game, including seven on goal. USF put two additional shots on goal in the first half, including one at 8:03 by Ogi Perucica. Alessandro Bianchi, Zak Boggs and Kevon Neaves also registered shots on goal, while Devenish would finish the game with a pair on goal.
Sophomore Jeff Attinella earned his third consecutive win, recording four saves and increasing his season total to 13.
USF sits in first place in the BIG EAST Red Division. The Bulls will return home on Friday, Sept. 26 to face Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. before hosting West Virginia (Sept. 28) and Syracuse (Oct. 3) during the three-match homestand.
