Game 17- Louisville
Post Game Quotes
January 14, 2009
USF Sun Dome- Tampa, Fla.

USF Head Coach Jose Fernandez
On the game against Louisville...
I have to hand it to Louisville. They are a very good basketball team. They are 17-1. They have a very good player in Angel McCoughtry. I was proud of our guys in the second half. They kept battling even though we were down as many as 16 or 18 at one point.

On the key point in the game...
There were two big stretches during this game that you can look back upon. The last media timeout of the first half, it was a three point ballgame with 3:17 to go. They closed out the half on 14-2 run. That was huge. Angel McCoughtry fouled out with about 5:17 to go. It was an eight point ballgame. It was a three possession game. Louisville scored on four of their first five possessions without her on the floor. That is where we really needed to buckle down and get stops.

On having 16 rebounds against Louisville...
In practice, they always emphasis boxing out and then going to get it. Mostly, in my head, I was just thinking about getting good positioning and trying to box out. Often times we find ourselves trying to out-jump people. I think I was just trying to get good feet positioning and box out.

Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz

On maintaining their lead after Angel McCoughtry fouled out

“I was very proud of that. We played our Central Michigan game earlier in the year where we scored 95 points in that game and (Angel McCoughtry) scores four, so I knew we could score without her. I was more concerned with how we were going to handle their runs. I was really, really proud of our composure ? (Deseree') Byrd and Canyce Bingham stepped up. We had a lot of freshman on the floor and I was very pleased with how we handled things. Most important I thought we did an outstanding job defensively the entire night.”

On controlling USF's scoring runs

“We worked extremely hard on handling their press. At the start of the game we did a very good job of breaking the press and scoring off of it. I thought they stopped pressing us because we scored in transition and in turn we only turned the ball over 14 times and for us that doesn't happen very often so I was pleased with that.”

On limited one of the nation's top scoring teams

“We both play the same way. Our goal is to try to get points off turnovers, I write our goals on the board everyday. Our goal today was to get 20 points off turnovers and we come up with 29. Our goal was 18 second chance points, we come up with 18. Transition fast break was 14 we have nine down here but I'm pleased with that.”

Brandie Radde, Jr., G

On USF's style of play

“They're very aggressive, they're a very active team. They did a very nice job rebounding tonight, especially on the offensive glass. That is something we have to get back to work on.”

On Louisville's 17 unanswered points to end the game

“We just started getting stops on defense and we started knocking down shots but it was nice to go into the locker room on this big run.”

On controlling one of the nations top scoring teams

“We focused a lot on our defense and especially with them being a very quick team and knowing that they like to push the tempo. We're also a team that likes to push the tempo but at the same time we knew we would have to slow them down and I think we did a nice job of that.”

Candyce Bingham, Sr., F

On USF rallying back from a big deficit in the first half

“They kept getting offensive rebounds ? they were 6'3”, 6'4” and we weren't trying to box them out we were just trying to out jump them and that wasn't working. They also have three very good three point shooters and that is what helped them cut the lead.”

On USF cutting the Cardinals lead to six

“We knew they were going to make a run. Coach (Walz) talks about that ? they make a run, then we make a run. We just made a run and tried to keep it going and keep our composure.”

On controlling one of the nations top scoring teams

“The coaching staff talked about them being the third highest scoring team in the country and they have three very good guards that can shoot the three really well.”
