October 27, 2009 | Women's Golf
TAMPA- The University of South Florida women's golf team picked up a second place team finish at the Pat Bradley Invitational thanks to an individual championship from freshman Shena Yang.
Yang picked up her first collegiate tournament victory by shooting an 8-under 208 for the tournament.
“It was an exciting event, and I am happy with my three rounds,” Yang said. “It's even more awesome that my team played well also. I feel like this tournament is a great way to the [fall] season. I'm very proud of our team. We worked hard and have come a long way.”
Yang began the tournament with consecutive 4-under rounds of 68, and finished the 36-hole tournament with an even final round to capture the individual championship at 32nd Annual Pat Bradley Invitational at the Pelican Preserve and Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.
“I am proud of the effort, especially Shena's 8-under finish,” said head coach Marci Kornegay. “She was determined to finish the season with a win, and she made it happen. This is the first for this freshman.”
The Bulls as a team finished in second place, their highest team finish of the season.
“I am extremely proud of the team,” said Kornegay. “We were in contention after the first hole and were in a fight for three solid rounds.”
USF finished just seven strokes behind Furman University for first place overall, and two strokes ahead of in-state foe UCF.
The Bulls got great scores from all six players who competed in the tournament.
“Each person stepped up their games, and I am proud of that effort,” said Kornegay.
The Bulls also got top-25 performances from Ana Lopez and Rachel Edwards, who finished 20th and 23rd respectively. Lopez finished 7-over for the tournament including a 74 and 73 to finish off the two day competition. Edwards finished just one stroke behind Edwards with the highlight coming with an opening round 73 for the senior.
The Pat Bradley Invitational concluded the fall season for the Bulls, and they will look to continue their success into the fall season.
