TAMPA-Trying to keep the momentum from the first game rolling, the University of South Florida softball team did just that as the Bulls claimed an 8-0 victory over the Florida A&M to wrap up the 2009 USF The Game Tournament.
“I thought our girls did a great job to focus on every pitch,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “We got some good at bats and that started the ball rolling.”
The Bulls overpowered the Rattlers in five innings and would ride the right arm of freshman Brittany Bowles, solid defense and some timely hitting to push their record to 4-1 in the tournament and 10-5 overall.
The Bulls nursed a 3-0 lead into their half of the sixth but they would push across three runs to inflate their lead to 6-0. After consecutive singles by Kelly McCarver and Ashley Bullion and a fielders choice by Lauren Rodriguez, the Bulls had runners on second and third with one out. Kendall Arnold would than single to left scoring Bullion.
A FAMU error and a walk by pinch hitter Becky Frye would load the bases for USF. Pinch hitting for Kafalas, JoJo Medina would send a drive to the warning track in right for a sacrifice fly allowing Merrill Robinson to score and make it 6-0.
In her just her third collegiate start, Bowles was outstanding throwing 5.1 scoreless innings. While raising her record to 2-1 on the season, she struck out four while allowing just three hits. Bowles was relieved by senior Bree Spence.
Spence was good in relief to complete the shutout working the final 1.2 innings not allowing a base runner in closing out the game.
The Bulls would get on the board early as Tara Toscano would continue her hot hitting. With Gina Kafalas on first Toscano would slice a liner in between the shortstop and third baseman but would go all the way to the wall after going through the legs of the left fielder, allowing both Kafalas and Toscano to score giving to the Bulls an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
USF would end the game in the sixth by adding two more runs. Kelly McCarver scored for the second time on the day on another Bull hit and Arnold ended it by driving in her third run of the game with a fielder's choice.
The Bulls were named the USF The Game Tournament champions while scoring 20 runs in five games and only allowing four runs.
The Bulls will now head up I-75 to Gainesville for the University of Florida Softball Tournament on Friday February 27. They will take on Texas Tech at 1:30 on Friday than will play host to Florida in the night cap. Florida is currently ranked as the No. 2 country.
