TAMPA - The University of South Florida softball team (27-13 overall, 6-2 conference) defeated the Georgetown Hoyas (5-18 overall, 0-4 conference) 4-1 in the second game of the doubleheader to sweep the two-game conference matchup.
“All the individuals that are doing well right now are the juniors and seniors,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “The ones that have been really successful are the ones that have put in the time and effort in the off-season.”
The Bulls tallied eight hits for the second game in a row to the Hoyas five.
Junior catcher Cat Olnick led the Bulls with two hits, extending her hit streak to 11.
“Cat has been an animal out there,” said Eriksen. “She put a lot of time in the weight room and conditioning to allow herself to catch almost all of the games as well as produce offensively.”
The Hoyas put the first run on the board in the second inning on two hits.
The Bulls answered back with two runs in the second inning on a JoJo Medina RBI single and a defensive error by the Hoyas to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls' defense turned a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth inning to clear the bases after a leadoff hit, as the Hoyas tried to rally back from a 2-1 deficit.
Junior Alison Savarese sent a ball to deep fly ball to left field in the fourth inning to allow Caitlin Schneider to score from third. Savareses' eighth sac fly moved her tied for sixth all-time in USF's record books.
Junior Ashley Bullion sent her first home run of the year over the right field fence in the sixth on the first pitch she saw from right hander MacKensey Carter.
She finished the game going 1-for-1 with one run scored and one RBI.
Freshman Brittany Bowles (6-3) earned the start and the win, while fellow right handed freshman Candace Howell earned her second save of the year.
Junior Kristen Gordon tossed 2.1 innings of relief, striking out five.
USF will be back in action on March 28 as they play host to Villanova University at Noon in a conference doubleheader matchup.
