Jovita Clinches 4-3 Win Over Marquette on Senior Day

On a day in which Bulls head coach Don Barr honored his lone senior, the No. 44 University of South Florida men's tennis team jumped out in doubles to hold on and grind out a 4-3 victory over the visiting Marquette Golden Eagles Monday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.

USF, now 11-8 on the season, got off to a fast start as the No. 2 and 3 doubles quickly took care off their opposition to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.

It would be the freshman duo of Wael Kilani and Yannick Yoshizawa to get the Bulls going. The pairing, playing in the No. 3 slot, jumped out to a 7-2 lead on Jonathan Schwerin and Mark Rutherford then cruised to an 8-4 win.

Clinching the point for USF was the sophomore-senior combination of Jamal Adderley and Mahmoud Hamed. The two made quick work of Dusan Medan and Stephen Shao by an 8-4 margin.

Following the doubles, the Coach Barr and Bulls honored Hamed, the Bulls only senior. The Cairo, Egypt native who has put together a 35-21 dual match singles record over his two years at USF.

The Bulls headed to singles action with a 1-0 lead and sophomore Romain Deridder quickly extended the lead to 2-0 with a straight set win over Mark Rutherford, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 5 position.

After Marquette posted a victory in the No. 3 slot, Adderley tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stephen Shao.

Holding a 3-2 lead with two matches still undecided it would be the Bulls' No. 1 Lucas Jovita putiting the match on ice for USF. The No. 75 singles player in the country outlasted Trent Hagan, 7-5, 6-4.

With the win the Bulls improve to 8-1 at home on the season and halt a three match losing streak.

USF turn their focus to the 2009 BIG EAST Championships, which they will host April 16-19 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bulls enter the 2009 Championships as a three seed setting up a rematch with six seeded St. John's. Earlier this season, the Bulls defeated the Red Storm, 4-3, March 12 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
