Bulls' Comeback Falls Short in BIG EAST Quarterfinals
April 17, 2009 | Women's Tennis
TAMPA- Sophomore Irene Rehberger's single's victory marked the lone point as the University of South Florida women's tennis team came up short in their comeback in a 4-1 loss to sixth seeded Louisville in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 BIG EAST Championships at the Andros Tennis Courts on the USF Campus.
Rehberger improved her record to 11-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lindsay Jones in the No. 1 singles. The country's No. 72 singles player has now won 11 of her last 12 matches.
Rehberger's triumph tied the match at one after the Bulls lost the doubles point. The Cardinal's registered victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point.
The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead with victories in the No. 2 and No. 6 singles but USF showed signs of life as junior Lauren Shumate and junior Natalia Guevara forced and held leads in the third set. However, Louisville's Natalia Baez 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over junior Ally Mueller clinched the 4-1 victory for the Card's.
With the loss, the third seeded Bulls fall to 6-13 on the season and will now play in the BIG EAST consolation bracket against eight seeded Pittsburgh at the PE Courts tomorrow at 9 a.m.
