TAMPA -- Former USF offensive lineman Matt Huners signed a free agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers and will report to rookie camp later this week.
The Palm Harbor native started 27 games and played in 34 during his USF career. The conference coaches named Huners second team All-BIG EAST in 2008, when he successfully returned from a knee injury that sidelined him for most of 2007.
Huners worked almost exclusively at left guard. He graded out at 84 percent on the season with 61 total knockdowns and collected a season-high 15 knockdowns against NC State, grading out at 93 percent.
Huners joins former teammates Ryan Schmidt and Taurus Johnson as players that have quickly signed free-agent deals after the NFL Draft. Schmidt signed with the Tennessee Titans. Johnson inked with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Linebacker Tyrone McKenzie was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots. He is the first player in USF history to be taken in the third round and went at the third highest position in program history.
