PITTSBURGH, Pa. ? After a back-and-forth ball game, the University of South Florida softball team (33-20 overall, 13-9 BIG EAST) outlasted the Pittsburgh Panthers (24-24 overall, 8-15 BIG EAST) in game one, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers took the early two-run lead in the first inning, but the Bulls matched the score in the third inning. Freshman Janine Richardson's dropped a bunt single to start the third. Junior Tara Toscano slapped a single to third and Britta Giddens reached on a fielder's choice, which placed Richardson on third. Catcher Cat Olnick sent a ball to deep right field that allowed Richardson to cross home for the Bulls first run.
After the failed attempt to get Richardson out at home, Giddens put herself into scoring position. A single up the middle by JoJo Medina allowed Giddens to score from second and even the score at two.
The Bulls took the lead in the fifth. Giddens roped her 13th double of the season and later scored on a Pitt error to put USF up 3-2.
The Panthers fought back and scored two in the bottom of the fifth to take the 4-3 advantage.
The Bulls comeback would be complete in the sixth inning.
Junior Alison Savarese punched her third hit of the game to lead off the sixth. After advancing two bases, Savarese stood on third with two outs. Richardson knocked her second home run of the season to give the Bulls a 5-4 lead and seal the win.
To secure the win, the Bulls put four runs on the board in the seventh with two outs. Medina doubled and back-to-back walks by Kelly McCarver and Savarese loaded the bases. Junior Lauren Rodriguez singled to score pinch runner Brittany Bowles. Kendall Arnold singled to right field to push across two more Bulls runners. Heads up base running by Arnold allowed Rodriguez to cross home before she was tagged out in the run down.
Senior Cristi Ecks started the game tossing 4.2 but freshman Candace Howell (7-5) earned the win only allowing one hit and striking out four.
