TAMPA- The University of South Florida women's golf team finished in 12th place at the Cougar Classic Monday behind stellar performances from Shena Yang and Ana Lopez.
“I am optimistic about our team's performance this week,” said head coach Marci Kornegay.
Lopez (+4- 79, 69, 72—220) and Yang (+4-72, 78, 70—220) finish tied for 25th individually after finish 4-over for the tournament. Each player had one round of even-par along with one round under-par.
Yang, the Bulls' freshman sensation, collected six birdies in Monday's final round to shoot a 2-under 72 in her first tournament as a Bull.
“Shena put a 72, 70 bookend on a terrific three day total,” said Kornegay. “Her desire to be the best is so apparent in each of her shots.”
Lopez, one day after recording a hole-in-one, finished her impressive opening tournament with an even-round 72 on Monday.
“Ana has finally broken through with her lowest competition round with a 69,” said Kornegay. “She is feeling comfortable going on.”
The Bulls (+32- 304, 298, 294—896) as a team finished in 12th place at 32-over, jumping one spot after being in 13th after Sunday's two rounds. The Bulls recorded a 294 score as a team on Monday's final round, the sixth lowest team round of the day.
Senior Rachel Edwards (+8- 76, 73, 75—224) was very consistent in the first tournament of her 2009-10 campaign. Edwards posted a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for 39th individually.
Georgia shot an 850 as a team for the tournament, breaking their previous low tournament score of 858 to win the Cougar Classic.
The Bulldogs finished 14-under par seven strokes ahead of runner-up Florida State.
Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish with a 208 for the tournament and capture the individual title. Silva finished just one stroke ahead of second place and Florida State's Lacey Agnew.
The Bulls will continue their 2009 fall tournament schedule on Sept. 21-22 when they will compete in the Napa River Grill Invitational, where the Bulls will see their first BIG EAST opponent. The Napa River Grill Invitational is hosted by the Louisville Cardinals in Louisville, Ky.
