TAMPA – The University of South Florida women's soccer team defeated St. Johns University Friday evening at the USF Soccwe Stadium 2-0 to improve their record to 10-4-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the Big East.
Chelsea Klotz kicked off the scoring early with her eleventh goal of the season a minute and a half into the game. Junior midfielder Rehana Murani sent a perfect ball through the middle of the St. John's defense and Klotz buried the ball into the lower left hand corner.
That would be the only goal for either team in the first half; however, both teams had a few good chances. Venicia Reid had a great chance for the Bulls five minutes into the game when she took the ball down the left side and took a left-footed shot that went just wide right.
Klotz would also have another opportunity later in the half on a play almost identical to the one she scored on earlier in the half, but St. John's keeper Kristin Russell was able to make the save.
The only real good chance for St. Johns came at the 29:20 mark, but USF keeper Nicole McClure made two amazing saved to preserve the Bulls 1-0 lead.
St. Johns came out strong in the second half with an early opportunity at the 42:23 mark, but McClure was up to the task and made the save. The Red Storm had another good chance with about 20 minutes left in the game when Jen Leaverton took a shot from straight on. McClure was able to make the save again for the Bulls.
USF would have a couple of chances throughout the second half before finding the back of the net for the second time. Venicia Reid put the game away with 8:35 left when she scored her seventh goal of the season. Reid was able to break loose after the Red Storm's defense was pushing up to try and tie the game. Valorie O'Brien was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Bulls had a few more chances to put another goal on the board but were unable to convert. Nicole McClure made 7 saves for her seventh shutout of the season.
The Bulls outshot the Red Storm 22-10 and had 11 shots on goal to the seven for St. Johns.
USF now holds sole possession of third place in the Big East American Division after tonight's win and UConn's loss. The Bulls next game will be on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. when they host Syracuse on senior day.
