QUEENS, N.Y. - The University of South Florida men's soccer team wrapped up their regular season on Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to St. John's.
The Bulls finished conference play in fourth place in the red division with the loss to the Red Storm. USF finished at 4-3-2 in league play tied with St. John's and Villanova each with 14 points, but finished ahead of Villanova due to head-to-head record.
All-American goalkeeper Jeff Attinella has another solid performance in his final regular season game of his career with USF. The senior recorded five saves on seven shots, but it was not enough to give USF the win.
The Red Storm jumped out the an early lead in the 18th minute, as Tadeu Terra took a feed from teammate Dom Sarle for the one-timer from two yards out.
Shaun Chin and Hasani Sinclair led the way for the Bulls offensively with a shot on goal apiece, but were unable to net one, as the Bulls lost the close 1-0 decision.
The Red Storm out shot the Bulls 7-2 on the night, despite the Bulls having the advantage in corner kicks 4-3.
USF had plenty of opportunities in the loss, but just could not capitalize.
In the third minute, Shaun Chin took a corner, giving Hasani Sinclair a chance from inside the box, but he missed wide right, missing a chance to take the early advantage.
St. John's would take advantage right away, as Terra netted the first Red Storm goal of the night.
In the 33rd minute of the opening half, St, John's took a corner, and got off a pair of saves, but Attinella was able to clear them out without allowing further damage.
The teams entered halftime with the Red Storm leading by just a goal, and USF nearly tied it up in the 56th minute, as a Sinclair corner just missed again.
With the Bulls hanging around late in the game, St. John's gave themselves some breathing room in the 80th minute, as Sverre Gundhus flicked the ball past attinella off of a pass from Kyle Hoffer for his first goal of the seasosn, to give St. John's the late lead.
The Red Storm were able to protect the lead and hung on to win, 2-0 to finish third in the BIG EAST Red Division, winning the head-to-head tie break with the Bulls.
