Thomas Earns Northwestern Mutual Academic Honor

The University of South Florida has teamed up with Northwestern Mutual Teague Financial Group to spotlight the top Bulls in the classroom with the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month award. A criminology major, track and field athlete Jared Thomas earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors during the outdoor season last year. He earned a 3.81 GPA last spring, while earning 16 credit hours. One of the BIG EAST's top throwers, Thomas used a fourth-place finish at the 2010 league meet to propel him to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet, which qualified him for the NCAA Championships. He became USF's first-ever male qualifier for the national meet in the throwing events and ended up placing 19th in the discus with a mark of 168-2. Earlier last season, he set the school record in the discus with a throw of 193-6. In his first season, Thomas was tabbed the team's Outstanding Freshman Athlete of the Year after missing a trip to the NCAA Championships by one place. He finished 13th at the NCAA East Regional after placing third in the discus at the BIG EAST Championships. Thomas also took fifth at the U.S. Junior Championships in the disc. Each month, the USF Academic Enrichment Center staff will choose a Bull as the Northwestern Mutual Student-Academic Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be classroom success, GPA and overall academic status. |
