
Bulls Advance To Semifinals With 4-0 Win Over Rutgers

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (April 23, 2010) - The University of South Florida women's tennis team returned to action this morning taking on Rutgers in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Conference Championships at the Courtney Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. USF got off to a good start handing the Scarlet Knights a 4-0 loss.
Senior Jessica Zok and junior Natalia Guevara started out the morning for the Bulls in their No. 3 doubles match against Caitlin Baker and Maryana Milchutskey. Zok and Guevara won eight straight games against Baker and Milchutskey, giving USF their first doubles win of the day.
Senior Lauren Shumate and redshirt sophomore Janette Bejlkova kept the momentum going for the Bulls in their No. 2 doubles match against Katherine Arlak and Leonora Slatnick. Deadlocked at 2-2, Bejlkova and Shumate went on to win the next six games to earn the 8-2 victory. With the win USF earned a 1-0 advantage heading into singles competition.
The Bulls duo of junior Irene Rehberger and senior Melissa Koning took on Amy Zhang and Jennifer Holtzberg in the No. 1 doubles contest. Zhang and Holtzberg lead 6-2 over Rehberger and Koning before the match was stopped.
Senior Allyn Mueller started out singles competition for USF in her No. 6 singles match against Baker. Mueller took care of her Scarlet Knights opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. That gave the Bulls a 2-0 lead over the Scarlet Knights.
Rehberger earned USF's third point of the day in her No. 1 singles match defeating Zhang 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Ecaterina Vasenina helped seal the win for the Bulls in her No. 3 singles match against Arlak handing her a 6-2, 6-2 setback.
Koning also competed in singles action for USF in the No. 2 singles position against Holtzberg. In the first set, the match was tied 5-5 before Koning went on to win the next two games to earn the 7-5 first set victory. In the second set Koning was up 4-3 before the match was stopped.
Guevara took on Slatnick in the No. 5 singles position. Guevara fell in the first set 6-2. In the second set Guevara was ahead 2-1 before the match was ended.
Zok competed in the No. 4 singles position for USF against Milchutskey, losing the first set 6-3 and was down 1-0 in the second set before the match was stopped.
The win advances USF to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championships where it will face the winner of the DePaul and Louisville match in the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
