Athletic Trainer/Physician Extender Residency Program

The University of South Florida Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is pleased to announce a 13-month Athletic Training Residency Program designed to develop the certified athletic trainer's skills as an clinical orthopaedic physician extender.

Mission
The mission of the Graduate Athletic Training Residency Program is to prepare Athletic Trainers in the role of clinical physician extender.  Through educational opportunities, hands-on clinical training, and exposure to best practice patterns, residents will acquire the necessary tools for 21st century orthopaedic & sports medicine services.  Graduates of the program will be prepared to join an orthopaedic practice and immediately make an impact on that practice by improving cliniical efficiency, patient satisfaction and overall patient care. 

The goal of USF's Athletic Training Residency is to provide high quality experiences in orthopaedic care, education and research in an environment that promotes and facilitates clinical and ethical growth for the athletic training resident

The residency will begin on July 1, 2011 and end on July 31, 2012
Annual Stipend $20,000

 

Candidate Qualifications

  • Current BOC Certification
  • Florida STate Licencse or eligible
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Orthopaedic Tech Certification, or in application process
    (requires 6 months of experience specific to orthopaedic technology under the direct supervision of an Orthopaedic Physician)

The primary learning experience will take place in the Carol and Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Health Care, a state-of-the-art outpatient clinical and surgical center.  The Morsani Center is home to a complete line of diagnostic imaging; ambulatory surgery center; and outpatient facilities including 60 clinic examination rooms. 

The resident will receive education/ training and clinical expereince in the following areas

  • Sports Medicine Clinic
  • General Orthopaedic Clinic
  • Sterile technique and surgical skills
  • Musculoskeletal radiology
  • DME/orthotics
  • Casting
  • Administration
  • Research

The Athletic Trainer Resident will learn to provide patient-centered, cost-effective, and evidence-based care while helping to improve the efficiency of the Orthopaedic Physician's practice.

The AT Resident will expand his/her fundamental knowledge of patient care, including all aspects of the medical practice.  This will include front desk and patient admission to the clinic, initial triae and evaluation of the patient, assisting the physician in formulating a treatment plan, casting, bracing and patient education.  Additionally AT Residents will learn the essential skills necessary to assist the surgone in the operating room.  This will include learning techniques in sterile processing, setting up a sterile field, preparing a patient for surgery, and assisting the suggeon during the procedure.

Rotations will take place at a state-of-the-art outpatient facility and will include orthopaedic sports medicine, general orthopaedics, foot and ankle, hand surgery, primary care sports medicine and radiology.  The AT Resdident will share educational experiences with undergraduate athletic training and medical students, orthopaedic residents and fellows.  Weekly orthopaedic Grand Rounds and monthly journal clubs will also be a part of the educational process.
