Bulls Honor Seniors in Final Home Game, Fall 1-0
October 09, 2011 | Women's Soccer
By: TOM ZEBOLD USF Senior Writer TAMPA – When head coach Denise Schilte-Brown started at USF five years ago, the Bulls were far from being in the national spotlight. Much has changed since then for the USF women's soccer team and much credit goes to her first true recruiting class that was honored Sunday at Corbett Soccer Stadium. Despite the rain pouring down on the field, family members happily trotted out to the to help honor 11 seniors who definitely have left a big imprint on the program. “I think it's supposed to be a celebration of the people they are, the futures they have and what they've contributed to this university,” Schilte-Brown said. “These girls have left their mark and their legacy, and we're really proud of them.” The only thing that didn't go well for the Bulls was their fortunes inside of six minutes remaining in a 1-0 loss to Providence. The game remained an offensive struggle until USF came inches away from taking the lead in the 85th minute. Senior Gina Pacheco fought her way in front of defenders in front of the box and chipped a shot over Caitlin Walker that took a long bounce and hit the bottom of the post. The ball bounced Providence's way in that instance and again in the final minute of regulation. Emily Castle took a free kick that bounced in the box and right off the foot of Melina Toman, who scored the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining. “These girls mean a lot to us and they came out and fought hard today,” Schilte-Brown said. USF takes the road for the rest of its regular season. The Bulls' next game is 7 p.m. Friday at Syracuse.
