USF Drops to 10th on Day 2 of UCF Challenge
February 14, 2011 | Women's Golf
The University of South Florida women's golf team dropped one spot into a tie for 10th on Monday at the UCF Challenge, held at the par-72, 6,319-yard RedTail Golf Club outside Orlando. The Bulls carded a 14-over 302 to fall 21 strokes behind leader Coastal Carolina, who sits at 2-under par through two rounds.
“We stayed in it for the most part today,” USF head coach Marci Kornegay said. “The wind picked up about two hours into our round and created some difficult conditions and made the holes play a little different from the way our practice and first rounds played. We were not able to capitalize on our birdie opportunities on the back side.”
Shena Yang and Kelli Pry each shot a 2-over 74 on Monday to post the lowest score among Bulls for the day. Pry came out of the clubhouse on fire with three birdies on her first six holes, but couldn't keep the momentum and ultimately bogeyed five of her last 12.
After posting an even-par 72 on Sunday, Emily Van Etten was inconsistent with two birdies and six bogeys on her way to a 4-over 76.
Ana Lopez posted the last score for the team with a 6-over 78. The senior was 1-under through seven holes, but suffered a double-bogey and four bogeys on the back nine. Karli Heimbecker couldn't find a rhythm for much of the day and finished at 7-over.
Yang is currently 24th among individuals at plus-3. Van Etten is a stroke behind her at plus-4 and in 29th overall.
The final round begins Tuesday morning via shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. USF is scheduled to play the round with Augusta State and Texas-San Antonio.
