USF Drops No. 71 Iowa, 7-0

The University of South Florida men's tennis team got its spring break off to a good start Monday with a 7-0 win over No. 71 Iowa at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls are now 8-3 on the year with their next match coming vs. Auburn on Wednesday.
“I thought we did an excellent job today,” USF head coach Don Barr said. “I see our confidence building, and we're playing a lot smarter. We're getting the game experience we've been lacking so far this season.”
Wael Kilani was the Bulls' first singles winner of the day, defeating Nikita Zotov 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 position. Kilani is now 9-1 as a singles player on the year. Federico Sabogal, who improved to 9-2 with his win, defeated Austen Kauss 6-0-6-3 to join Kilani on the sidelines. The match-clinching win belonged to Romain Deridder, who downed Will Vasos 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
Yannick Yoshizawa got back to his winning ways with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Tom Mroziewicz at No. 5, and Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Garrett Dunn at No. 6.
The Bulls No. 1 player, Lucas Jovita, was the only one taken to a third set. He defeated Mark Bruche 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to close out the day's proceedings.
In doubles play, USF needed extra games in two of three matches. Jovita and Hagn won over Zotov and Dunn, 8-5, but Deridder and Yoshizawa could only put Bruche and Vasos away by a 9-7 score. Kilani and Sabogal clinched the point with a 9-7 win as well over Krauss and Jonas Dierckx.
The Bulls take on Auburn at 12 p.m. on Wednesday at the USF Varsity Courts. Admission to all USF tennis matches is free.
