March 14, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The University of South Florida women's tennis team earned its first BIG EAST win with a 7-0 shutout of Marquette on Monday at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls are now 4-8 this season with another conference contest on Tuesday vs. Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
The Bulls took two of three doubles matches to secure that point before quickly claiming three singles contests to secure the victory.
“It was good to get that first conference win and good that everybody got a win,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “We have some more work to do this week beginning tomorrow, but we're off to a good start.”
First off the courts in singles was Loreto Alonso Martinez in the fourth position. Her 6-0, 6-0 win over Paola Calderon preceded Janette Bejlkova's win over Gillian Hush, 6-1, 6-2 on court three. The match-clinching win came from Irene Rehberger in the top spot, a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kelly Barry.
After the outcome was determined, Alessandra Bonte dropped Chelsea Utting in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 13-11. Ecaterina Vasenina almost claimed her match over Olga Fischer in two sets at No. 2, but ultimately won a third-set tiebreak as well, 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 10-3. Kate Parker was the last to finish at No. 6, defeating Christina Ruiz 7-5, 6-3 for her first dual match victory of the spring.
In doubles, Rehberger and Vasenina beat Fischer and Rocio Diaz 8-5 to clinch the point after Bonte and Parker earned an 8-6 win over Utting and Gillian Hush. Bejlkova and Martinez fell at No. 1 to Ruiz and Rachael Hush, 8-6.
