USF Defeats TAMU-CC 4-1 at Rice Invitational

The No. 50 University of South Florida men's tennis team improved to 9-5 on the season with a 4-1 win over No. 60 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Rice Invitational on Saturday. The Bulls will conclude play at the event on Sunday with a matchup vs. UCF.
“They were a tough team, and we got off to a good start with a win in doubles,” USF head coach Don Barr said. “We played very well in singles, but we can't rest on our success with a match against an in-state rival tomorrow.”
Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard clinched the match for the Bulls with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Matt Westmoreland on Court 5. Gerard has won four-straight matches dating to the St. John's match on March 13.
USF's other winners on Saturday were Wael Kilani on Court 2 and Federico Sabogal on Court 6. Kilani earned his 11th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 over James Langford, and Sabogal downed Gergo Weidinger, 6-3, 6-0.
Jamal Adderley dropped his match vs. Aurelien Tave, 6-2, 6-1, and the remaining two singles matches were stopped once the team outcome was determined.
In doubles play, USF earned the point on the strength of wins from Yannick Yoshizowa and Romain Deridder in the No. 2 position and Kilani alongside Sebastian Hagn at No. 3. Yoshizawa and Deridder were the first off the courts with an 8-6 win over Tave and Langford before Kilani and Hagn clinched the point by way of a 9-7 victory over Westmoreland and Robert Raguz.
The Bulls return to action at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday.
