No. 50 Bulls Fall at No. 25 Notre Dame, 6-1
March 27, 2011 | Men's Tennis
The University of South Florida men's tennis team dropped its match with No. 25 Notre Dame by a score of 6-1 on Sunday in South Bend, Ind. The loss snaps a three-match win streak for USF and gives the Bulls an 11-6 overall record (2-1 BIG EAST).
“We weren't firing on all cylinders today,” USF head coach Don Barr said. “I think our guys realized that they're going to have to play well throughout the lineup in order for us to come back up here and win the BIG EAST tournament. We're not completely healthy right now, and so hopefully we can fair better against these guys later this year.”
The Fighting Irish clinched the match at No. 3 singles when USF's Yannick Yoshizawa fell to Daniel Stahl 7-5, 6-3. The Bulls were down 3-1 at that point because of losses by Sebastian Hagn to Blas Moros, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 and Federico Sabogal to Greg Andrews, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4.
No. 73 Lucas Jovita picked up the only win for USF during that time, downing No. 58 Casey Watt, 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 1 singles spot.
After the match was decided, Wael Kilani fell to Stephen Havens, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2, and Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard lost to Niall Fitzgerald, 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 at No. 5.
In doubles play, the Bulls dropped all three matches. No. 62 Jovita and Adderley lost 8-3 to Fitzgerald and Spencer Talmadge in the point-clinching match after Romain Deridder and Yoshizawa fell to Watt and Stephen Havens, 8-3. Kilani and Sabogal also dropped their match with Andrews and Tyler Davis, 8-4.
The Bulls return home to host VCU at 2 p.m. on April 1.
