Bulls Eliminated from NCAA Tournament, 4-0
May 13, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped its first-round match of the NCAA Championships to Texas, 4-0, on Friday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Miami. The Bulls battled in doubles but ultimately fell short before dropping three singles matches at the bottom of the lineup to end the match and the 2011 season.
“It was tough for us today,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “Texas is a team that is pretty strong all the way through, and we were only healthy and playing well at the top of our lineup. We had a good year overall, and we really challenged some of our younger players, so we can turn towards next year and hopefully improve as a team.”
Texas' Amanda Craddock clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Loreto Alonso Martinez on Court 4. Alessandra Bonte had earlier dropped her match to Juliana Gajic, 6-1, 6-0, on Court 5 to give the Longhorns a 3-0 lead.
Kate Parker's match on Court 6 was the first to finish. She dropped that contest 6-2, 6-2, to Cierra Gayton-Leach.
The Bulls were fairing much better at the top of the lineup, but those matches did not finish because the contest was decided. Senior and ITA's No. 35-ranked player Irene Rehberger was up a set on Court 1 with No. 21 Aeriel Ellis, and No. 93 Ecaterina Vasenina was also up a set with Kristal Damico on Court 2.
Janette Bejlkova dropped her first set on Court 3, but led 5-2 in the second set with Maggie Mello.
USF dropped the doubles point despite close matches on Courts 1 and 2. Craddock and Gayton-Leach downed Bejilkova and Martinez, 8-6, at No. 1 to clinch the point for the Longhorns. Bonte and Parker had minutes earlier fallen 8-2 to Gajic and Mello on Court 3. Rehberger and Vasenina were down 5-4 to Damico and Ellis on Court 2 when play was stopped because the point had been decided.
The Bulls finish the dual match season with an 11-12 overall record and having appeared in the NCAA Championships five out of the last six seasons under Moreno. Though the team's season is over, Rehberger will continue play as an individual at the NCAA Championships beginning May 25th in Stanford, Calif.
