University of South Florida volunteer assistant tennis coach Tamer El-Sawy has been named technical director for the Egyptian National Team and captain and coach of the 2011 Egyptian Davis Cup team. The Egyptian Tennis Federation made the announcement in Cairo late last month.
“It is a tremendous honor to be asked to lead the Egyptian National Team through this period,” El Sawy said. “This is a period that will go down in history as a time of change and sacrifice for my home country. This is an opportunity I have always wanted, and I look forward to giving back in my field.”
El Sawy has served as a volunteer assistant under USF head coach Don Barr since 2000, helping the Bulls to two conference championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He played professionally for seven years, including in 13 grand slams, after playing collegiately at LSU where he was a three-time All-American.
The Cairo native currently runs the Elsawy Tennis Center out of Tampa and was also the Egyptian Davis Cup team coach and captain in 1998. Egypt's preliminary Davis Cup competition begins over the July 4th weekend in Cairo.
El Sawy will return to the States following competition and remain a volunteer assistant for the Bulls.
