MILWUAKEE - The USF men's basketball team's Big East winning streak was halted at three Tuesday night in Milwaukee, Wisc. Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had a game-high 19 points for the Bulls in a 67-47 loss at No. 18 Marquette.
Victor Rudd Jr. was the only other player in double figures with 10 points for the Bulls, who made a total of 16 field goals (35 percent).
USF turned the ball over 22 times and had 10 assists in their first league loss since Jan. 10. Four of the Bulls' five Big East wins this season have come when they assisted on 71 percent of their field goals.
"We have to go back home, regroup, get back on the right track and do the things that were working for us - our defense, playing a lot smarter offensively and especially not forcing things," said head coach Stan Heath, whose Bulls fell to 12-9 (5-3).
Darius Johnson-Odom had a team-high 17 points, while Jae Crowder and Davante Gardner each had 15 for Marquette (17-4, 6-2). The Golden Eagles turned the ball over only five times.
"We gave ourselves no chance," Heath said.
The Golden Eagles led the Bulls, 33-21, at the half and became the first USF opponent to score more than 30 by the break since Nov. 23.
It was a two-point game with 6:15 left when Marquette went on a 17-7 run to finish the first period. Johnson-Odom had 10 points and Jamil Wilson had eight off the bench.
Fitzpatrick led USF with seven points off the bench and Robertson had five by the break as the Bulls were shooting 32 percent from the field. USF committed 10 fouls - Ron Anderson Jr. was limited with three - and the Bulls turned the ball over seven times.
What plagued USF perhaps the most in the first half was the fact that the Bulls only went to the free-throw line twice in the first 20 minutes.
"We had been doing such a great job of closing halves, getting momentum plays and we had been taking care of the ball well," Heath said.
The Bulls look to regroup 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Providence at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
