Holtz Excited About 20 New Additions

By TOM ZEBOLD

TAMPA - Letters of intent are signed, deals are sealed and the Bulls have delivered a recruiting class worth getting excited about.

A total of 11 players pledged their allegiance to USF football on Wednesday to go along with five junior college transfers, three early enrollees and one greyshirt who have been on campus since January. The star-studded roster of 20 includes Sean Price, rated as the No. 4 tight end in the nation, Gainesville High products Chris Bivins and Tashon Whitehurst and highly recruited offensive lineman Kameron Davis from Northeast High in Lauderhill, Fla.

"I think it is probably the most talented freshman class we've signed since I've been here," USF head coach Skip Holtz said. "Every one of these guys we've signed I feel really good about."

Eleven of USF's new Bulls play on the defensive side of the ball including junior college transfer Tevin Mims, a lineman, who previously played for the Texas Longhorns. USF added four offensive linemen to the mix including 6-foot-4, 270-pound Kofi Amichia from Powder Springs, Ga.

"We did an awful lot to answer the needs that we had. We came in talking about needing some upperclassman help at a few positions - defensive backs, offensive line and defensive end - and I feel like we answered that," Holtz said.

Here is a look at USF's 20 new signees and Holtz's take on each one:

Kofi Amichia, freshman, OL: The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder earned all-state honors in three straight seasons at McEachern High School in Georgia. He played in the state All-Star game at right tackle after helping McEachern go 30-5 in his three years at the varsity level. Amichia also spent some time on defense and recorded a sack.

Holtz's Take on Amichia: "He is a 270-pound athlete who is going to continue to grow into his body. Great strength and power."

Chris Bivins Jr., DB: The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder out of Gainesville High School was a three-time all-area selection after posting 188 tackles, nine interceptions and four forced fumbles in three years. He's also a threat at receiver and had 13 catches for 350 yards and six touchdowns.

Holtz's Take on Bivins Jr.: "He's a very talented player who can really play either side of the ball. He's extremely explosive, very confident. We had really high recruiting battles with him. He made the decision to come here, which really excited me because I thought he was one of the guys who could come in and has a chance to make a difference even as a freshman because of his athleticism."

Joshua Brown, redshirt junior, DB: The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder posted 21 tackles, an interception and six pass breakups at Arizona Western Community College in Yuma, Ariz. The team went 11-1 and earned a spot in the NJCAA National Championship game.  Prior to college, Brown was one of the top 100 players in the state of Texas and one of the top cornerbacks on the national stage.

Holtz's Take on Brown: "He can play corner or safety. He's a guy we're looking for some immediate help from."

Kameron Davis, freshman, OL: The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder was a four-year starter who played mainly at left tackle. He did not allow a single sack in his final two seasons at Northeast High School and Boyd Anderson. Earned first-team all-state and all-county honors as a senior while posting 40 pancake blocks.

Holtz's Take on Davis: "Big, athletic tackle. Great pass protection on film. I think he's a very athletic offensive lineman who has a huge upside."

Guito Ervilus, freshman, DL: The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was ranked 14th in the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida Super 60 and 53rd in the publication's Florida Top 100. He posted 63 tackles and nine sacks in his three-year career at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. Ervilus also played basketball for four years, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds as a junior.

Holtz's Take on Ervilus: "Tall, athletic, multiple, can play a number of positions. We signed him as a defensive end. He's played receiver, defense and tight end. He's played a lot of different positions."

James Hamilton, freshman, DL: The 6-foot-2, 330-pounder played on both the offensive and defensive line at Olympia High School in Orlando. He became a two-time all-state honoree while posting 55 tackles, five forced fumbles, three sacks and three fumble recoveries as a senior. Holtz's sees Hamilton as a solid run-stopper.

Holtz's Take on Hamilton: "When you look at him, he's cut out of the mold a little bit of a Terrell McClain, Cory Grissom -larger body, strong, powerful, quick and athletic. I'm excited with what he's going to bring to the table as a defensive lineman with some opportunities. I'm excited to see him in the spring."

Eric Lee, freshman, DE: The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder was an all-state honorable mention selection out of Daphne High School in Alabama, where he posted 62 tackles and 7.5 sacks in his final two seasons. He had 44 tackles and 4.5 sacks as a senior.

Holtz's Take on Lee: "I think he has a bright, bright future. We had very competitive recruiting battles with him. He has a very disciplined family. His dad is a retired Marine and he's just a fantastic young man, great in the classroom, a great person with an awful lot of talent. As an Anthony Hill and some of the other upperclassmen ends graduate, I see him being a guy that after he comes in and maybe redshirts a year, he's got a chance to step into that and be a real impact player for us."

Lawrence Martin, redshirt junior, OL: The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder redshirted at Merced College in California after he earned first-team Region II All-California honors at offensive tackle for the Blue Devils. The Daytona Beach native formerly was an all-state selection out of Seabreeze High School.

Holtz's Take on Martin: "He is a very talented player. I think he has feet and athleticism to play tackle, but he also has size and strength to play inside at the guard position. I think he gives you some flexibility. I think he has a chance to come in, make and impact and compete for one of those starting jobs that we have available right now... If I were to use terms, Lawrence Martin is probably more like a Jeremiah Warren, who is a guard/tackle for us."

Chandlor Mathews, junior, OL: The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder shined at tackle the past two seasons and played in 18 games at Pearl River Community College. He earned all-region honors last year and was awarded the Dobie Holden Memorial Scholarship, given out to honor the late Dobie Holden who made a name for himself as a coach at PRCC.

Holtz's Take on Mathews: "He gives you a little bit more of the flexibility of playing center and guard... Chandlor Mathews would be more like a Chaz Hine. He's a center or guard."

Jarvis McCall, freshman, DB: The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder earned letters in three seasons at Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla. Posted 84 tackles, eight interceptions and 14 pass breakups in his career. He helped lead the Hawks to a 15-0 season and a Class 6A state championship.

Holtz's Take on McCall: "Safety, corner, tall, rangy, athletic. We're really excited that he's a Bull."

Tevin Mims, redshirt junior, DE: The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder helped Navarro College go 10-2 and earn a spot in the Southwest Junior College title game after posting 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, four sacks and three pass breakups. Mims played in four games as a true freshman at Texas in 2009.

Holtz's Take on Mims: "He's a defensive end that we think has just a huge upside. The last two years we've lost four defensive ends when you talk about Patrick Hampton, Claude Davis, Craig Marshall and David Bedford. We've lost a lot of firepower at the defensive end... I think Tevin Mims kind of rounds out a two-deep for you and gives you some upperclassmen that you have an opportunity to play with that has an awful lot of talent."

D'vario Montgomery, freshman, WR: The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder played on both sides of the ball for Winter Park High School before being selected to the Offense-Defense All-American Game and the Central Florida All-Star Game. He ranked sixth on the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida Super 60 and 34th in the newspaper's Florida Top 100. Montgomery totaled 1,662 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns in his final two seasons. He also had 112 tackles and seven interceptions on defense.

Holtz's Take on Montgomery: "He's impressive from the moment you lay eyes on him. He's a big, athletic, physical wide receiver who can do a lot of different things for you. He can play a lot of different roles because he's got size, strength and speed. He's a complete package."

Fidel Montgomery, junior, DB: The 5-foot-11, 183-pounder tied for fifth-most tackles nationally at the JUCO level with 121 at Southwest Mississippi Community College this season. The Marianna, Fla., native also is a dangerous return man and averaged 24.1 yards on 13 kick returns in 2011.

Holtz's Take on Montgomery: "He can play a couple different positions and provide some immediate help for us in the back end. He's very athletic. Both he and Josh Brown are like mirrors of each other."

Alex Mut, freshman, WR: The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder out of Port Charlotte High School enrolled this month after greyshirting during the fall of 2011 while recovering from a knee injury. He was an all-state selection after catching 154 passes for 2,610 yards and 27 touchdowns. Mut also played defensive back and had 103 tackles, 19 interceptions, 29 pass breakups and two touchdowns.

Holtz's Take on Mut: "He was a guy that we were going to bring in that I felt could have come in with Andre Davis and Ruben Gonzalez and compete for playing time a year ago... He will be competing this spring with a very talented receiving group. He's got great hands and he's a great young man."

Daniel Perry, freshman, DL: The 6-foot-8, 225-pounder posted 124 tackles and 12 sacks in his final two seasons at the University School in Fort Lauderdale. Perry led his team to a 12-1 record his season year while racking up 40 tackles and six sacks on the way to become a first-team all-county selection.

Holtz's Take on Perry: "Tall, athletic, great motor at 6-8 he is going to grow into a large defensive end. He's going to give us something we haven't had in a little while and that's that range on the edge."

Michael Pierre, junior, RB: The 5-foot-11, 211-pounder was a two-year starter at Golden West College and totaled 1,160 yards and nine touchdowns on 227 carries. Pierre played his high school ball at Agape Christian Academy in Winter Garden, Fla.

Holtz's Take on Pierre: "He'll help fill the void of Darrell Scott being gone. I would say that he'll bring more athleticism and speed to our backfield."

Sean Price, freshman, TE: The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder recently played in the Under Armour All-American game and was ranked as the No. 4 tight end prospect in the nation. Price finished his career as North Marion High School's all-time leader in receiving yards (1,651) and had 22 touchdowns. He finished one reception shy of tying the school's all-time record with 81.

Holtz's Take on Price: "He's a special talent. Athletic. Receiving tight end. I think it bodes well for our future at that position."

Jalen Spencer, freshman, DB: The 6-foot, 175-pounder ranked 90th on Florida Varsity's list of top players in the state. He was invited to play in the Florida vs. George All-Star Game and the Florida All-Star Game. The three-year captain at Pensacola High School totaled 3,541 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for 3,261 yards and 37 scores in his three seasons at the school. Also posted four interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns.

Holtz's Take on Spencer: "Versatile defensive back who can play safety or corner. Jalen is very athletic, very versatile and I think a bright spot for our future in the secondary."

Tashon Whitehurst, freshman, LB: The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder posted 337 tackles, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles and three interceptions in three seasons at Gainesville High School. Whitehurst was named a first-team all-state selection as a senior after totaling 162 tackles three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Holtz's Take on Whitehurst: "Athletic, hard hitting, physical, nose for the ball, playmaking linebacker. I went and watched him play a game and I think he made every tackle. He can run sideline to sideline, yet can play inside the tackles as well."

LaMarlin Wiggins, freshman, WR: The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder was ranked 43rd on Florida Varsity's list of top players in Florida. The three-year letterman posted 117 catches for 1,843 yards and 12 touchdowns at Plant City High School. He ranked as the nation's 18th-best receiver in the nation heading into his senior season.

Holtz's Take on Wiggins: Tall, athletic receiver who can do a lot of different things. He can go make the circus catch for you.
