Stellar doubles play set the tone for a gritty win by the USF women's tennis team Friday in Raleigh, N.C.
The Bulls won all three doubles matches at NC State to earn the decisive point in a 4-3 victory that snapped the Wolfpack's two-match win streak at home.
"That gave us momentum going into the singles," USF head coach Agustin Moreno said.
Partners Danielle Mills and Paula Montoya earned an 8-6 win over Wolfpack opponents, as did Fanny Fracassi and Lucie Rey. Ecaterina Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez both lost their singles matches, but teamed up to hand NC State's Joelle Kissell and Ashley Miller an 8-6 loss.
Mills, Montoya and Fracassi all went 2-0 on the day after two-set wins in singles play. Those efforts were a big reason why USF handed NC State its first home loss in three matches this season.
"They played really well," Moreno said. "Those three points were huge, but it wasn't as easy as it looked. Paula had the clinching match at the end."
The Bulls' busy weekend continues at noon on Sunday when they face Wake Forest in Winston Salem, N.C.
