TAMPA – The USF women's soccer team fell to UCF, 2-1, in its American Athletic Conference opener in Orlando on Friday night.
Demi Stokes scored her third goal of the year in the 74th minute, but the Bulls (5-2-3, 0-1-0) were unable to hold off the Knights high-powered attack.
“I feel like our girls are really working hard and fighting hard, and we're building a strong season,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “UCF is a really good team, they have strong individuals and they're a top ranked team in the country and they deserve to be there.”
After a scoreless first half, UCF (8-2-1, 1-0-0) struck first with a breakaway goal from Kayla Adamek in the 54th minute.
However, Stokes and the Bulls responded 20 minutes later on a rebound goal. A.J. Blount recorded her first assist on the play.
Unfortunately, the Knights took only four minutes to retake the lead when Megan Fish headed one home off of a corner kick to put UCF back on top for good.
The Knights are the first team this season to score multiple goals against the Bulls and outshot USF 16-9 for the game.
USF goalkeeper Christiane Endler had another solid game, making six saves on the night.
The Bulls will look to bounce back when it returns to action next Friday night when they host Temple at 7:30 p.m.
