No. 59 Bulls Defeat Syracuse in Season Opener

TAMPA, JAN. 11, 2014--- The USF women's tennis team came out strong in their spring season opener defeating Syracuse University 4-3 on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bulls were slow out of the gate, dropping two out of three doubles matches, but had a good showing in the singles matches, picking up four of the six matches. The match was clinched on court two, with Loreto Alonso-Martinez defeating Maddie Kobelt in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3 (10-4).
As for doubles play, only the team of Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez were able to pick up a win, defeating Syracuse's Amanda Rodgers and Maria Avgerinos 6-0 in the third and final doubles match. In singles action, Kayla Rizzolo defeated Rodgers 6-1, 6-1, Fanny Fracassi defeated Aleah Morrow 6-4, 6-2 and Olga Martinez defeated Maria Avgerinos 6-1, 6-3 to round out the Bulls four points.
The team will now have a week off before the Michigan Hitting Duel, a three day match hosted by the University of Michigan that kicks off January 18th. Their next home match will be February 5th against FGCU on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
