STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 17, 2014) — It was all about the girls from New Zealand on Friday as juniors Olivia Chance and Kate Loye recorded goals for the Bulls in a 2-0 shutout over the UConn Huskies.
Chance scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, and the game-winner, just five minutes into the first half to put the Bulls up 1-0.
Fellow New Zealander Loye recorded her third goal of the season on an impressive assist by Leticia Skeete. The sophomore Canadian managed to tap the ball past a UConn defender to allow Loye to pound it into the bottom left corner.
The Huskies outshot the Bulls 14-11 but thanks to an unrelenting defense, led by juniors Jackie Simpson, Crisitina Ferral and Alexis Rossi, USF was able to keep UConn off the board for the Bulls fifth shutout of the season.
While Chance and Loye were the offensive power in the game, it was freshman goalie Kat Elliott who had arguably the best game of her career, recording a season high seven saves.
Coming into the game, Elliott had a 2-2-1 record and had recorded 15 saves in just under 500 minutes of play. As the UConn offense pounded the goal late in the second half, the freshman goalie made incredible saves to record her second shutout of the season.
The Bulls improved to 8-6-1 on the season and 3-3-0 in AAC play, while UConn dropped to 9-4-4 and 2-2-3 in the AAC.
The Bulls will finish their conference road schedule with a matchup against Temple on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
The USF women's soccer team has posted two consecutive 10-plus win seasons and three in the last four years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance and recorded their first tournament victory in 2010. USF returns 23 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference second team forward Demi Stokes and All-Rookie Team defender Leticia Skeete. They also bring back 11 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
