TAMPA, NOV. 2, 2014 – Big offensive output from six different Bulls helped the USF volleyball team to its fourth conference win Sunday.
USF (10-14 overall, 4-8 The American) got at least six kills from six different players to out-kill East Carolina 55-43 at home Sunday afternoon on the way to a four-set win, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.
Middle blockers Jennica Mullins and Joli Holland produced a combined 12 kills offensively while patrolling the net to send back four blocks, each. USF's eight blocks limited the Pirates to a .126 hitting percentage as the Bulls rolled to the win.
After ECU edged the Bulls in the first set, USF got the offense going in the second set. Holland knocked down three kills in four swings as the Bulls outhit ECU .355-.158 and never trailed in a 25-18 win.
USF kept the pressure on in the third, racking up 20 kills, including 10 from junior outside hitter Erin Fairs. Fairs hit .500 in the set, and added eight digs in the set, while Mullins and freshman right side hitter Adyson Goodnight each recorded four. Playing libero, junior Wylie Devlin popped up eight digs as the Bulls out-dug ECU 28-22 in a 25-20 win.
Five service aces told the story in the fourth set, as setters Alex Mendoza and Natalia Soares each posted a pair of aces, and sophomore Jaime Dickinson added one. Holland contributed three of her four blocks in the set, as USF took home an exciting fourth set, which featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes.
Fairs finished the match with 18 kills and 24 digs, while freshman Priscilla Ehieze added 11 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Dakota Hampton notched eight kills to go with 13 digs, matching Devlin's 13 digs. The Bulls travel to Temple and UConn next weekend, with eight matches remaining in the conference season.
