Allen Jr. Scores 26, USF Falls at Detroit 67-57

DETROIT, Dec. 6, 2014 – Senior Corey Allen Jr. scored 26 points to lead USF in the Bulls' 67-57 loss at Detroit 67-57 Saturday at Calihan Hall.

Allen Jr. (St. Louis) was 10-of-16 from the field including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The senior's 10 field goals were half of the Bulls' total as USF (5-3) finished 20-of-48 from the field for 41.7 percent. Detroit shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field and 47.6 percent (10-of-21 from 3-point range, both the best by a USF opponent this season. The Bulls entered the game leading the American Athletic Conference in field goal percentage defense at 37.7 percent.

"We couldn't capitalize on our size and that falls on me and the staff," said head coach Orlando Antigua of the height advantage USF possessed. "We have to do a better job of getting our bigs engaged and when they get fouled, they have to make their free throws."

USF was 12-of-20 from the free throw line for 60 percent.

USF led 25-20 with 6:19 to play following a jumper by Allen Jr., but the Bulls went the next 5:51 without a field goal. Detroit (6-3) ended the half on a 13-3 run to take a 33-28 lead at halftime.

The Bulls trailed by 10 points, its largest of the game, with 7:29 remaining before mounting a comeback. USF got it to within one point twice, 54-53 with 5:27 on the clock and 56-55 with 4:19 left. However, the Bulls could never take a second half lead as the Titans ended the game on an 11-2 run.

"Right now we are putting so much pressure on AC (Anthony Collins), Corey and Nehemais (Morillo) to carry the load on offense," said Antigua. "Corey had it going so we kept trying to find him. AC hit a couple of shots late in the game. We were asking AC to take shots in the second half. He had gone 33 minutes without taking a shot."

Morillo (Dominican Republic) finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Collins (Houston) finished with six points and a team-high four assists.

The Titans were led by Juwan Howard Jr. with 16 points, but it was Anton Wilson that hit big shots by way of the 3-pointer. All, but one of Wilson's field goal attempts were from 3-point range as he finished 5-of-7 from beyond-the-arc and had 15 points.

"This is a team that we knew shot the ball well," said Antigua. "It's the first team that has shot this well against us."

USF will have some time off before its next game which is against Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the Sun Dome.
