TAMPA, March 7, 2014 – The USF women's tennis team put together an impressive showing Friday afternoon shutting out St. John's, 7-0 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
It is the sixth straight win for the Bulls with their last loss coming on February 14 when it dropped a tight 4-3 decision to LSU. This was also the second shutout of the season as they also blanked FGCU on February 5.
In doubles play, Loreto Alonso-Martinez and Kayla Rizzolo easily handled Khrystyna Pavlyuk and Stephanie Elgegren, 8-2 at first doubles. Fanny Fracassi and Olaya Garrido-Rivas also won at second doubles, 8-5 to pick-up the doubles point for USF.
Alessandra Bonte made quick work of Elgegren to earn the first win in singles at the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-1. Alonso-Martinez bested Pavlyuk in the top spot, 6-2, 6-0 while Olga Martinez notched a 6-0, 6-3 win at fifth singles. Garrido-Rivas clinched the match for the Bulls at third doubles picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Fracassi, 6-1, 7-5 and Rizzolo, 6-4, 6-2, rounded out the wins for USF in the fourth and second singles spot, respectively.
USF (8-3) will have a day off before welcoming Old Dominion to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday. The match is scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m. beginning with doubles action followed by singles play.
