TAMPA, MAY 28, 2014 – USF ace Sara Nevins was named an NFCA All-American for the third consecutive year on Wednesday to become the first three-time All-American in program history.
“Being named in any sport to an NCAA All-American team is special,” head coach Ken Eriksen said. “Two times is definitely a wow and three times tells you that this young lady is one of the best to play any sport at USF.”
The senior was honored as a first-team all-region selection on May 15 and led the American Athletic Conference in wins (29), ERA (1.35), strikeouts (299) and opposing batting average (.144) this season.
The Pinellas Park, Fla., native was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. She also was a top 25 finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year Award for the third straight season.
“It's an honor to be recognized as one of the top players in the country and it feels pretty cool to be the first softball player to be a three-time All-American at USF. I really couldn't have done it without the help of my teammates, coaches and support staff,” Nevins said.
Nevins posted a record-breaking season in 2014, becoming the program's all-time wins leader with 101 career victories. She also became only the fifth active pitcher to break the 1,000 strikeout plateau, finishing her career with 1,103.
The lefty also threw a school-record four no-hitters this season, including her second-career perfect game on May 3 in an 8-0 win at Temple. Nevins ends her illustrious career as the program's all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, appearances, saves, games started and opponent batting average.
“We are so fortunate to have Sara stay home and put USF Softball on the national map,” Eriksen stated. “I hope her competitive fire and desire to become the best she can possibly become will continue on.”
