SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 27, 2014 – Sophomore Matthew O'Neal finished in eighth place in the men's triple jump at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday at Sacramento, Calif.
O'Neal's best jump of 53-feet-3 inches came in his fifth jump, which broke his own school record of 5-2.5 set just two weeks earlier at the NCAA Championships where he became a first team NCAA All-American.
“It was a blessing to be out here in Sacramento to compete with some of the best in the world,” said the usual humble O'Neal, a native of Jackson, Miss.
As the top under 23-year old, O'Neal will represent Team USA at the NACAC Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada in August. Will Claye of Nike won the event with a distance of 58-3.
Also competing in the triple jump was senior Shane Lewis (Orlando), who placed 15th with a jump of 49-11.25. The meet included the best in America with the top professionals and student-athletes competing.
Senior Courtney Anderson (Cape Coral, Fla.) will compete against the best in the USA in the women's high jump on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET. Sunday's events will be on Universal Sports at 3 p.m. and NBC at 4 p.m.
Freshmen Catherine Blaney (Belleview, Fla.) and Christopher Grinley (Lake Worth, Fla.) will compete at USATF Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore. on Saturday, July 5. Blaney will run the 3,000m while Grinley will compete in the 110m hurdles.
