TAMPA, AUG. 25, 2014 – USA Softball/USF Head Coach Ken Eriksen and former Bulls' star pitcher Sara Nevins helped lead Team USA to a silver medal at the ISF Women's World Championship on Sunday in Haarlem, Netherlands.
Team USA fell to Japan, 4-1, in the gold-medal game after defeating Australia, 8-1, earlier in the day to advance to the final.
Nevins pitched 3.1 innings in the final, allowing four hits and one run while striking out two and had a fantastic showing in the tournament overall.
The lefty appeared in eight of the team's 11 games in the tournament and in 18 innings pitched only surrendered two earned runs while striking out 23 batters and posting a 0.77 ERA.
The Red, White and Blue went 9-2 overall in the tournament and were one of only two teams to advance through pool play unbeaten. The only team to beat the U.S. was Japan, who finished the tournament undefeated on the way to winning the gold medal.
Led by Eriksen, Team USA was nearly unbeatable throughout the summer, posting a 39-6 record overall, including tournament titles at the General Tire World Cup of Softball IX and Italian Softball Week.
Nevins led the pitching staff with a 0.72 ERA and 83 strikeouts while finishing third on the team with eight wins.
Current USF softball players Karla Claudio and Monica Santos also participated in the tournament with the Puerto Rican National Team.
