LUBBOCK, Texas (Sept. 20, 2015)— After remaining undefeated through the first eight games of the season and having the best start in the Denise Schilte-Brown era, the USF women's soccer team fell, 2-1, in double overtime to No. 17 Texas Tech Sunday afternoon.
With just two minutes left in the second overtime period it looked as though the Bulls (7-1-1) would draw their second tie of the season. After a foul, a free kick from Alli Murphy found the back of the net to lift the Red Raiders past USF.
The Bulls ultimately controlled the game, outshooting the Red Raiders 13-9 and forcing Texas Tech keeper Lauren Watson to make nine saves.
The Red Raiders would get on the board first in the ninth minute of play. After a USF foul, Murphy lined up for a free kick near the centerline. The shot was just out of the grasp of sophomore keeper Kat Elliott, giving Tech the 1-0 lead.
Despite the early goal, USF controlled the first half, taking six corner kicks and recording seven shots. Watson had to make four saves in the first half as the Bulls outshot the Red Raiders, 7-2, with a 4-1 shot on goal advantage.
The Bulls would pull even in the 56th minute on a goal by Trudi Carter. The Kingston, Jamaica native dribbled up the middle of the field before firing a shot past the Tech keeper for her third goal of the season.
Olivia Chance led the Bulls with five shots, including three on goal. Jordyn Listro was just behind Chance with three shots, two on goal. Elliott recorded four saves, bringing her season total to 32.
For the fifth time this season, the Bulls held their opponent to under 10 shots. USF has scored at least one goal in every game and has held opponents to just five goals total. Until today, the Bulls had yet to allow any team to put up more than one goal.
Conference play begins at this week at home for USF as UConn and Temple come to Corbett Stadium for a pair of matches. USF will look to avenge a loss to the Huskies in the conference championship last season when UConn comes to town on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The Bulls will take on the Owls of Temple Sunday, Sept.27 at 1 p.m.
